Premier SsangYong Towing Centre Manchester

SsangYong vehicles have long been renowned for their towing ability. With over 60 years of experience of making 4×4 vehicles and with its roots in rugged military vehicles our current range has our best towing ability ever. To support that both Rexton and Musso have just been uprated to 3500KG to match the best in their respective classes.

What makes a good towing car?  Real towing ability comes from a combination of strength, pulling power, weight and design.

Strength

The Korando has a new monocoque body construction. Traditionally, 4x4s had a separate body and chassis, but the Korando’s design allows for great strength and rigidity without excessive weight. The big 4×4 Rexton, Musso pick-up and Turismo still retain the separate chassis which provides a strong towing platform for heavier loads.

Design

A small proportion of the towed load rests directly on the towbar, so its design, build and fitting are hugely important. The Korando’s towbar is engineered to withstand up to 80kg. Believe us, that’s a lot.

Meanwhile the big Rexton’s towbar can carry up to 128kg. Good luck finding a caravan that’s too big for it.

Weight

Manufacturers quote the approved towing limits of their models, which for SsangYong range from 1500 KG for Tivoli diesel, to 2000 KG for Korando through to 3500 KG for Rexton and Musso. These are the maximum weights our vehicles can tow a braked trailer safely. However, different groups of towers view towing capacities differently – owners of horse boxes can often tow to the manufacturers limit, but tend to drive cautiously due to their precious cargo.

The Caravan Club advises that the weight of your caravan should not exceed 85% of the kerb weight of the towing vehicle – this is because most cars rely on their weight to help stabilize the towed mass. The SsangYong range is well suited to caravan towing with kerb weights often in excess of the competition and a spread of vehicles to tackle the largest vans.

Pulling

Pulling power (or torque) is more important in daily driving – and especially towing – than maximum power or 0-60mph figures. Because most people don’t use their cars for drag racing, the amount of pull at low engine speeds is a better indication of how well the car will accelerate or pull a load.

The SsangYong 2.2L diesel engine produces a big, constant 400Nm of pulling power from 2000-3000rpm. That’s more than many other cars with much larger engines. So it’s quick when it’s not towing and unflustered when it is.
